Privacy policy

Last updated: May 24, 2026

This policy describes how Karter (package name com.karterlauncher), an Android application, handles information when you use the app. Karter runs primarily on your device. We do not operate a user account system or a backend that stores your personal data.

Summary

Karter is a home launcher for Android head units and tablets. Optional features may request permissions such as location, contacts, call log, phone, notification access, and Bluetooth. You can deny or revoke permissions in Android settings at any time; related features will stop working or show limited UI until granted again.

Information the app accesses

Location

Used for weather on the dashboard and GPS-based speed. Approximate coordinates are sent only to Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) to retrieve weather forecasts. We do not operate a server that stores your location history.

Contacts and calls (optional)

If you grant permission, the built-in Phone screen reads contacts and call history on the device to show recents and searchable contacts. Outgoing calls may be placed through your paired phone over Bluetooth hands-free when supported. This data is processed on the device and is not uploaded to us.

Notification access (optional)

If you enable notification listener access for Karter, the app reads metadata from active media sessions only — for example track title, artist, and album art for the “Now playing” widget. Karter does not collect message text, notification bodies, or unrelated notification content.

Bluetooth and nearby devices (optional)

Used to show names of connected Bluetooth devices on the dashboard and to support phone features over hands-free when applicable. No audio streams or message content are read.

Network

Weather requests are sent to Open-Meteo. The app may contact a small public endpoint to verify internet connectivity before refreshing weather. No personal identifier is required for that check.

On-device storage

Preferences such as theme, dock shortcuts, hidden apps, and setup progress are stored locally on your device using Android DataStore. If you enable Android backup on your device, your device backup provider may include app preferences according to your system settings; we do not control that backup.

Data we do not collect

  • We do not require you to create an account.
  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not use advertising SDKs in Karter for cross-app tracking based on this policy’s scope.

Third-party services

Open-Meteo provides weather data. Their handling of requests is governed by their own terms and policies. When you open other apps from the launcher (maps, music, etc.), those apps’ policies apply.

Children

Karter is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Retention and deletion

Data stored on your device remains until you clear app data, uninstall Karter, or revoke permissions. Uninstalling the app removes locally stored preferences. Weather requests to Open-Meteo are transient network calls; we do not retain copies on our servers because we do not operate such servers for Karter.

Your choices

  • Grant or deny permissions in Android Settings.
  • Disable notification access for Karter in system settings.
  • Review in-app Settings → Privacy & data for a summary aligned with this policy.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
